N.G. is right up the street

There are many utilties in the country that sell NG (Natural Gas) for cooking but few who sell it for transportation. Yet NG is a premium fuel: it’s much more energy rich than liquid petroleum products including diesel, it’s much cleaner than diesel with lower PM (particulate matter) and in an engine sounds down-right quiet. The FL Clean Cities Coalition is stepping forward with a program to make pipeline NG a fuel for vehicles. Dave Bruderly, a Council at-large Voting Member, is leading this effort and has given us the following notes with links:

Clean Cities is a federal program coordinated by the US Department of Energy designed to help consumers understand the benefits and costs of converting to vehicles that operate on non-petroleum alternative motor fuels, are significantly more efficient, or both. This partnership program offers technical and administrative support to more than 90 regional coalitions of stakeholder groups with the objective of helping participants reduce petroleum consumption in the transportation sector.

The Clean Cities Fact Sheet provides details on the fuels and technologies supported by the program, the type of assistance available from USDOE and a national map of designated coalitions. The Florida map shows the coverage of the two designated coalitions, Space Coast and Gold Coast, and proposed coverage of additional regional coalitions. The Florida map also provides contact information for coordinators of the coalitions that are currently being organized as well as locations of public access natural gas fueling stations currently being installed.
